To Insulate or not to Insulate? There is no Question.
When we hear the word insulation, we often think of it as “that itchy stuff in the attic and walls”. It certainly isn’t sexy and adds no visual appeal to our homes and buildings. So it stands to reason that we are hesitant to spend our hard earned dollar on insulation when renovating. Yet, if you want to be comfortable year round and pay less for heating and cooling, upgrading the insulation is simply the smartest thing to do.
Air-Tite Insulation Services Inc. President and founder Peter Oomen understands that insulating your home or building can seem like an overwhelming and expensive undertaking. However, with the unique materials and techniques utilized by Air-Tite it doesn’t have to be that way. Usually, there is no tearing down of walls or major renovations required. Often in less than a day, our crews will complete the installation process in the walls and attics, saving up to 40% on heating and cooling costs. Air-Tite provides a safe, clean and cost-effective insulation option for homes and buildings.
Peter has 20 years of experience in the business and a comprehensive understanding of building science and construction. These attributes are essential to do a proper job insulating homes and buildings of all types. “I find it very rewarding to be able to assist homeowners, who want to stay in the home they love or the one they can afford, by dramatically reducing their energy bills with little to no disruption and at a minimal cost”.
As a third generation carpenter with a degree in Architecture, a certified home inspector and energy assessor, Peter utilizes his theoretical and practical experience when deciding on what insulation materials are best suited for a job and what installation method works best. Peter adds, “Insulation resists heat from travelling through the walls and ceilings of your home or building. It is also very important to reduce the rate air is moving in and out of the house as this allows the insulation to do a better job in keeping the heat in during the winter or out during the summer. The right insulation products, professionally installed, will do both of these things.”
What else? How about getting government rebates for insulating your home? Through the ecoEnergy program, home and building owners can receive substantial rebates that can often cover the cost of insulating and improving air tightness. Why? Natural Resource Canada knows that inadequate insulation and air leakage are major sources of heat loss in homes and buildings. So they offer rebates for those improvements that will make the greatest impact. The first step to achieving a comfortable, draft-free home or building is to have an energy assessment performed. As a certified energy assessor, Peter at Air-Tite can perform an assessment for you. Once an assessment has been conducted, owners are provided with a performance report. Almost like a report card that gives the home or building a rating between 0-100. A list of recommended upgrades is also indicated on the report that itemizes these upgrades in the order that will have the greatest to least amount of impact on your energy bills. Peter says “You don’t have to do all of the upgrades to qualify for the rebates; however, the more you do the more you get. You are the king of your castle”. The program is scheduled until March of 2011. On older homes and buildings, insulation is usually top of the list; however, the energy assessor provides owners with a complete examination of their home or building from top to bottom explaining how they might benefit from the various upgrades.
As a contractor, energy assessor and home inspector, Peter’s jobs have taken him into literally thousands of homes in Windsor and Essex County. By analyzing these homes it always reinforces the fact that the majority of our existing homes and buildings are either under insulated or have no insulation in them at all. “It always amazes me whenever I drill into a wall cavity and find it totally empty”. Peter counts his blessings for the awesome support of his family, the staff at Air-Tite and all the satisfied customers. It definitely has been well worth it and very rewarding.
